If there’s anyone more passionate about payroll, it’s Elizabeth Dilger, Clarity’s payroll specialist and bookkeeper. Liz has worked in office and bookkeeping roles for more than 20 years in a number of industries – but payroll is where she’s in her element! She lives between Brisbane and the Gold Coast with her partner, Scott, and two teenage children, Travis and Amity. They love going camping, fishing and travelling together.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY INTO THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
I first started in hospitality about 10 years ago when I worked as a bookkeeper in a bowls club. Prior to this, I was working in the building industry. During my time at the bowls club, I did shifts in functions, behind the bar and in gaming. (I also picked up a knack for fixing the pokie machines whenever someone was a bit rough playing them!) I learnt a lot about payroll, the club industry and the legal requirements of running and managing a gaming room under Queensland legislation.
After seven years at the bowls club, the club went into voluntary administration and I was made redundant. My subsequent roles were forever changing – I worked for a couple of independent supermarkets as a bookkeeper/office manager for a couple of years. I also worked in accounts payable and operations manager for a go-karting company, but the working hours meant I couldn’t spend as much time with my family.
When I saw the job ad for Clarity one evening, I applied at 8.40pm and by 7.30am the next morning, I received a phone call from Bryan asking me to come in for an interview. That was in June and the rest is history!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS?
I look after the weekly payroll for Hugos Manly, Hugos Pantry and the Gallagher Group, as well as all the extra maintenance that goes with payroll, such as superannuation, onboarding new staff, terminations etc. I enjoy it all – in particular, getting to know my clients.
Working at the bowls club for seven years, I built great relationships with bowlers and regular customers that I still have today. I enjoyed talking with the customers about their family and what’s happening in their life and how they would always say hi and ask about my kids or ask how my day was going.
Although I’ve only been at Clarity for a short time, I’ve built up good relationships with my clients. The staff at Hugos Manly always welcome me whenever I’m in Sydney – one of the many reasons I love my job.
WHAT’S A QUESTION YOU’RE COMMONLY ASKED BY CUSTOMERS?
I always get asked payroll questions from the staff. The majority of the time, I get asked, “Why do I get taxed so much?” and “When will my pay be in my account?” Both very important questions! I also get asked payroll questions from our clients, these questions are more about legislative requirements, such as award interpretation/changes and how this affects their business. Probably the major question for employers is about long-service leave as it can be quite confusing and complicated.
WHICH PUB OR RESTAURANT ARE YOU LOVING THIS MONTH?
I look after a number of clients for Clarity, mostly to do with their payroll as this is my specialty. I would probably say that my main client The Sportsman Hotel, is one of my favourites. I also process payroll for Hugos Group and they would be the clients with a lot of friendly staff – Kelly from Hugos Manly and Chrissie from Pantry are always easy to talk to and David from Hugos Manly makes me laugh.
WE’RE ALL ON A JOURNEY OF PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. ARE YOU STUDYING, OR IS THERE AN AREA YOU’D LIKE TO FURTHER EXPLORE?
I did my Certificate IV in Accounting about four years ago. Both of my teachers from the course were very insistent on me going further to university, but it was not the time. I would one day like to continue studying so will see how it goes. At the moment, I’m enjoying the new experience I’m having with Clarity and am constantly learning new things I’ve never had to know before in my previous positions.
